The Flag Ceremony is a ceremony that happens at every Girl Scout Event, honoring our country and the Girl Scouts. It is very exciting when your troop gets to perform the Flag Ceremony at Thinking Day or at another event. I got to do the Flag Ceremony with my troop a couple of years ago at our annual Thinking Day Celebration, and it was so much fun! If I remember correctly, we had two or three girls read the script, and the rest of us marched in with the flags in a little formation. If your troop ever gets a chance to do the flag ceremony, here is a sample script you can use and the stage directions for the girls holding the flags. You will need flags, poles, and stands. Stands can be made out of a couple crossed 2x4s with a piece of rebar sticking straight up and cut down bamboo makes great poles that can slide right down over the rebar (just drill through the divide inside the bamboo with a long drillbit). Sashes, white gloves, and music are nice extras!
Opening
“Color Guard Attention” (color guard enters room)
“Girl Scout Attention, Please Stand” (wait for everyone to stand)
“Color Guard Advance” (color guard goes to the center of the room)
“Please join me in the pledge to the flag”
“I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.”
“Please join me in the Girl Scout Promise”
“On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.”
“Color Guard Post the Colors” (color guard puts flags on stands – American flag is posted last and goes in the center)
“Color Guard Dismissed” (color guard marches out)
Closing
“Color Guard Attention” (color guard enters room)
“Girl Scout Attention, Please Stand” (wait for everyone to stand)
“Color Guard Retire the Colors” (color guard marches to flags and take off posts – American flag should be lifted off post first)
“Color Guard Dismissed” (color guard marches out)
The color guard is the group of girls that marches in and out with the flags (some are holding the flags and some march behind or beside, all are the color guard).
